Building the Dream
Herat is located in one of Afghanistan’s more stable provinces. Yet, like many cities throughout the region, it is a product of entrenched political and sociological forces that have resulted in chronic underdevelopment and held the outlying areas captive to profound poverty, low educational achievement and some of the worst health statistics and outcomes in the world.
This is where AAS plans to target its most important project to date: assisting those who are either unable to afford basic healthcare services or situated in remote areas that make access to quality medical treatment extremely difficult. We’re certain that if we build it, they’ll come – expecting mothers, children injured by land mines, those in need of antibiotics or essential medicines. And why AAS has made the commitment to constructing a high-quality healthcare facility in Herat that will act as the regional standard for medical services and stand like a beacon of self reliance for this historical province, built by Afghans and operated in part by CURE International.
Our Commitment
To fulfill this ambition, AAS is contemplating a 25-acre tract of land made available by the University of Herat, at a key juncture northwest of the city. It has also developed preliminary architectural plans drawn up by the award-winning firm of Miller Hull, led by founding partner Robert Hull, who spent several years as a volunteer with the Peace Corps in Herat. AAS is now in the process of acquiring the necessary resources to construct the healthcare facility through public and private funding, as well as through generous personal donations. But time is running out on the window that’s currently open.
We need volunteers to continue the humanitarian tradition for which AAS is known, as demonstrated through its realization of the Phoenix Learning and Cultural Center, the Herat School for the Blind and the Women and Girls Education Center.
